Different types of air guns – which air gun type is right for you?
Air guns come in several technical variants, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the difference between spring-powered, CO2, PCP, pump-action and nitro piston models. With the right knowledge, you can choose the air gun that best suits hunting, target shooting or hobby use.
Spring-powered air guns
The classic among air guns. By breaking the barrel or using a cocking lever, a spring is tensioned to propel the pellet. Durable, affordable and easy to use. Perfect for beginners and recreational shooting.
PCP air guns
These use compressed air from a pre-filled tank and offer low recoil, high accuracy and good range. Well suited for hunting and competition. Can be filled with a PCP pump or compressor.
Pump-action air guns
An integrated pumping mechanism gives you full control over power and the number of shots.Easy to use and affordable to run – perfect for those who want simplicity and reliability.
Nitro/Vortex piston air rifles
Similar to spring-powered models, but use a gas piston instead of a spring. They provide smoother shooting, lower noise, and less recoil. No refills are required, and they’re highly durable.
CO2-powered air rifles
Use 12g or 88g CO2 cartridges. Ideal for semiautomatic or full-auto models. Remember to use the right maintenance and accessories for optimal performance and longevity.
Choose the right air rifle – ask yourself:
- What will you use the weapon for – hobby, hunting, or competition?
- How important are recoil, noise level, and accuracy to you?
- Do you want easy operation or more advanced features?
