10 things you should have in your car – before a crisis hits

10 things you should always keep in your car in case of an emergency

Are you planning a long road trip this summer, or perhaps you need to drive over the mountains when visiting your aunt during the Christmas holidays? Whatever your reason for hitting the road, it’s always a good idea to be well prepared. You might think an accident could never happen to you, but it always happens to someone – suddenly, you’re stuck in a car without power, heat, or any way to contact anyone. What do you do then if you’re sitting there in a T-shirt with a dying phone?

We’ve put together a list of 10 things you should always keep in your car, so you can get through an emergency in good spirits.

1. First-aid kit

The first item on every survival list is, naturally enough, a first-aid kit. If an accident occurs and someone is injured, being able to provide basic first aid until help arrives can be lifesaving.A good first aid kit should include plasters, gauze, bandages, disinfectant, scissors, tweezers, and painkillers. Add a multitool for easy access to everything you need.

2. Emergency warning and reflective equipment

In addition to the mandatory reflective vest and warning triangle, it’s a good idea to bring a flashlight or headlamp. Extra lighting makes you visible on dark roads and can save lives in accidents.

3. Power bank

Your phone is essential for contacting emergency services, but it needs power. Keep a charged power bank in the car, preferably one with solar charging or a hand crank. Extra charging cables are also a smart idea.

4. Water and food

Consider putting together a small emergency supply in your car with bottles that can withstand cold and heat, as well as long-lasting foods such as energy bars or trail mix. It can make a big difference in a crisis situation.

5.Warm clothing

Even if the car is warm, things can quickly change if you get stuck. Keep warm sweaters, blankets, or wool underwear ready, especially in winter.

6. Jumper cables

A flat car battery is not uncommon. Keep jumper cables handy, or carry a jump starter so you can manage without help.

7. Fuel

If you run out of fuel far from civilization, a jerry can is worth its weight in gold. Also remember extra windshield washer fluid—it’s surprisingly important.

8. Snow tools

In winter, you should have more than just an ice scraper. A small shovel and possibly snow chains can be crucial for getting free from snow and ice.

9. Basic hygiene products

Toilet paper, disinfectant, and perhaps a small shovel can make unexpected stops more bearable—and a little more hygienic.

10.Maps and cash

GPS and card payments are great—until they stop working. Keep a paper map of the area you’re visiting and a few hundred kroner in the glove compartment. That way, you’re prepared for anything.

Remember!

Check your supplies regularly. Water and batteries have a limited shelf life. If you’re well prepared, it’s much easier to stay calm if something goes wrong.
