Guide - How to store paintballs

Paintball has become a popular hobby around the world, especially in Norway! The balls used in the game are made of different paint colors and the content is made of biomaterials that are supposed to dissolve in nature and come off clothes easily. Therefore, the balls have an expiration date and it's important to know how to store  them so that the paintball balls last as long as possible.

How to store paintball balls?

We recommend that you store them dry at room temperature of 20-22 degrees Celsius in a room with little light. In addition, we recommend that you turn the package regularly. Improper storage will reduce the shelf life.

How long do paintballs last?

There are different types of paintballs with different contents in addition to coming from different factories. Therefore, it will vary how long they last, but most agree that regardless of the content (as long as it's made of biomaterials) and brand, if stored correctly, the shelf life will be around 6 months to a year.

Influencing Factors

Generally, the balls will last about 6 months, but sometimes shorter and sometimes longer. For example, you can check when they were produced, if it's been over a year, the likelihood of them being expired increases and the quality decreases. Have the balls been exposed to sunlight? Have you dropped them on the ground? Forgot to rotate the package when storing them? Have they been exposed to low or high temperatures? All these factors can affect the shelf life of the balls.

What happens to the balls when they expire?

You can, of course, choose to still use them, but we do not recommend it as it can affect your game. Over time, the balls can become deformed, expand, or get dents in them. This makes them get stuck in the marker's barrel, and you'll end up having to clean the barrel in the middle of the game! Some balls may harden and not burst at all, while others can become very brittle. If the ball doesn't burst when you shoot, the shot won't count, and the opponent is still in the game.

Price and Quality

There's no direct link between the price and the durability of the balls, but a more expensive rental ball will withstand a bit more than the cheapest one. What matters most is how you store and keep them. Price is more indicative of quality; expensive balls have been in production longer to make them as round as possible and will therefore shoot better. But note that there is a difference in the brittleness of balls regardless of price, so if you have a mechanical marker that is hard on the ball, the most expensive balls will be too brittle.
